Commonly Asked Questions About Coloring Your Hair

Posted on enero 25 2023

If you've never colored your hair before, deciding to do so is a major move.

You may be feeling nervous after hearing some horror stories about their hair falling out, getting damaged and orange brassy hair, just to name a few.

So here are the most commonly asked questions about coloring your hair.

  • Do I go to a professional or color my hair myself?

If you are coloring your hair for the first time, you should seek the services of a qualified professional. Your best color option will be discussed with you by a qualified hairstylist based on your skin tone. The best approach to make sure you are not allergic to the chemicals and that your hair will achieve the results you want without being harmed is to have a professional perform a strand test.

  • Can I color my hair without damaging it?

You must use hydrogen peroxide to lift the hair if you are applying a permanent hair color (developer). In order to deposit the color, this technique elevates or opens up the hair's cuticle layer, allowing the color molecules to penetrate the cortex and potentially harm the hair if not done correctly. Your hair will become damaged if you use too much peroxide or if you frequently change the color of your hair (over-processing). However, if you choose a semi-permanent or demi-permanent style, they will only last a few shampoos but will help add extra shine and condition to the hair.

  • What's the difference between semi-permanent, demi-permanent and permanent?

Since semi-permanent hair color doesn't contain peroxide, it can't lift hair and can only make it darker rather than lighter. Because it only deposits the hair color on the hair's surface layer, the color only lasts for six to twelve shampoos.

Demi-permanent hair color contains less peroxide, therefore unlike semi-permanent color, it may slightly lighten hair. Demi-permanent colors place the pigment between the cuticle and cortex, extending their longevity to 12 to 26 washes.

While a permanent hair color, as the name implies, and it will last till the colored strands fall out. Anything more than that is not advised since it might harm the hair; permanent hair color can lighten hair up to 4 levels.

  • How often should I shampoo my hair after a hair service?

Wait at least 24 hours or better yet, 48 hours, after your color service before shampooing your hair. Particularly if you have a more vivid hue like red, try to keep your washing to three times a week.

  • How long do I have to wait before changing the color of my hair?

The state of your hair will determine all of this. It is best to discuss your alternatives with your hairstylist. It is advisable to wait until your hair is in better shape or until the color fades if you have damaged hair. Talk to your stylist about a color correcting procedure if you no longer like the color of your hair.
